The documentary team delves into Russell’s past and the prior incidents, discovering footage suggesting Russell’s involvement or monitoring of the events. Havel's tapes document the company's arrival at the Abaddon Hotel as they set it up for Halloween. Each employee experiences unexplainable events but Alex, the CEO of the company, is determined to open the attraction. Despite the disturbances, the Hell House group dismisses the activity and opens the attraction. All of the guests and company crew are attacked by supernatural beings and 15 people are killed.

Sara, who is interviewed by the documentary crew in a nearby hotel, asks for a break from filming. She tells Diane she will be in her hotel room - room 2C - if the team has questions. She also suggests the crew should break into the Abaddon to see for themselves what happened inside. Soon after, Diane attempts to leave a message at the hotel reception desk for Sara, but reception informs her that no one under Sara’s name is registered as a guest and there is no room 2C at that hotel. There’s a particular scene when the group enters the house that belongs on the all-time best horror camera shots list. The film’s foundation lies in the frightening novel by Richard Matheson, one of the best science fiction writers to ever exist.

Cast

After a few more rounds of re-cuts, the film was locked just before its first public screening at the Telluride Horror Show in October 2015. The film would also screen at Fear Fete Film Festival the same week, where it won the best paranormal film award. The worldwide distribution rights for Hell House LLC were acquired by Terror Films, with a North American VOD release date of November 1, 2016. The idea that the spirits’ connections to the house were caused due to the location being used for debauchery (drugs, alcohol, sex, etc.) along with vampirism and murder, was a great move in giving the location its own personality. There were so many shots and ideas that were reminiscent of William Friedkin’s The Exorcist, which wouldn’t be released for another six months. The creep factor was all brought together with a chilling score by Delia Derbyshire and Brian Hodgson, the duo that created the original theme music for Doctor Who.

Facts about the movie Hell Night

Casting took place in New York City in February 2014, and production took place shortly after, in May. Initially, the filmmakers were in search of an abandoned house to shoot the film in, as the original script had the events taking place in a house. As early as 2012, the director had been visiting many abandoned buildings and homes, including two in the New York county where the story takes place, Rockland County, New York. After not finding anything suitable, they instead began searching for real haunted house attractions to shoot in. They found the haunted attraction called the Haunting at the Waldorf Hotel in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, run by Angie Moyer, who served as the film's set designer. The script had to be changed in a few areas to reflect the change in setting.

Roddy McDowall’s Performance

The movie, directed by John Hough, effectively captures the eerie atmosphere of the haunted mansion through its stunning cinematography and haunting soundtrack. The performances of the cast, including Pamela Franklin and Roddy McDowall, bring depth and authenticity to the characters. McDowall’s portrayal of Benjamin Fischer, a tortured soul caught between the realms of the living and the dead, is particularly outstanding. One of the film’s strengths lies in its ability to keep viewers guessing with unexpected twists and turns.

Matheson’s screenplay would be picked up by Fox and helmed by John Hough, an English filmmaker who dabbled back-and-forth between horror and adventure movies in the 1970s, creating horrific thrillers like Twins of Evil and Sudden Terror, but also family-friendly movies like Treasure Island and Escape to Witch Mountain. Yes, the movie has gained a cult following over the years and is highly regarded by horror enthusiasts. The release included a 30-minute interview with director John Hough, a commentary track by actress Pamela Franklin, stills gallery, original theatrical trailer, radio ads and reversible cover art featuring the theatrical artwork and customized artwork for the Blu-ray release. Ann is subjected to erotic visions late at night, which seem linked to her lackluster sex life. She goes downstairs and, in an apparent trance, disrobes and demands sex from Fischer.

Slasher Podcast: Make Horror R Again

Its legacy as a horror classic is cemented by its ability to go beyond conventional scares and explore deeper emotional themes. The film’s artistic merit continues to captivate audiences, making it a must-watch for horror movie enthusiasts. The Hell House movies have garnered a dedicated fan base due to their unique blend of found-footage horror, supernatural elements, and immersive storytelling. What sets them apart from other horror films is their ability to create an atmosphere of dread and unease that lingers long after the credits roll. The use of found footage adds a sense of realism, making viewers feel like they are experiencing the horrors firsthand. Horror movies have always been a favorite among thrill-seekers, and the Hell House movies have carved a special place in the hearts of horror enthusiasts.

Possessed by the malevolent spirit, Tanner attempts to destroy it, thinking that it will harm the spirits in the house, but she is prevented from doing serious damage. She enters the chapel, "the unholy heart" of the house, in an attempt to warn the spirits, but she is crushed by a falling crucifix. Fischer wanders the house afterwards, attempting to sense psychic energy; in astonishment, he declares the place "completely clear!" But violent psychic activity soon resumes, and Barrett is killed. Pic premiered at Fantastic Fest and will be released by Well Go USA Entertainment on May 10th. Earlier this year, Ghost House tapped Sébastien Vaniček(Infested) to co-write and direct a new spin-off for the franchise, as we were also first to report.

He strikes her, snapping her out of the trance, and she returns to herself, horrified and ashamed. He is resentful, and spurns Fischer's warnings that the house is affecting Ann. Stricken by the accusation, Fischer drops his psychic shields, but he is immediately attacked.

The project is described only as an original story that Galluppi developed and brought to Raimi and team. It is revealed that what Mitchell saw was a possessed member of Hell House killing Sara; she has been dead the whole time they had been speaking to her, and there were, in fact, no survivors. Diane and her cameraman break in and see the aftermath of what unfolded that night. They go to the second floor, where they see a room labeled '2C', the same room Sara said she was staying in. Diane and her cameraman try to flee but are attacked by a ghoulish Sara and other ghostly figures. And each character that became possessed the ghost had to create a second, unsettling persona.

A team of cold case investigators checks into Carmichael Manor, but after four nights, they mysteriously vanish without a trace. The footage recovered from their stay proves to be even more disturbing than the unsettling content found on the Hell House tapes. Mitchell, a member of the documentary film crew, stays behind to catalogue Sara's footage. He sees something that deeply disturbs him, but is hidden from the audience, and tries to call Diane but cannot get through.

The Legend of Hell House is one of only two productions of James H. Nicholson after his departure from American International Pictures — a company he had run, along with Samuel Z. Arkoff, since 1954. Nicholson died of a brain tumour in 10 December 1972, before the film's release on 15 June 1973. Nicholson's company, Academy Pictures Corporation, also released Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry through Twentieth Century Fox on 17 May 1974.

‘Hell House LLC’ is a 2015 American found-footage horror film written and directed by Stephen Cognetti, with production by Joe Bandelli. Presented in a documentary style, the film chronicles a group of Halloween haunted house creators as they prepare for the 2009 opening of their popular attraction, Hell House. “The Legend of Hell House” is a bone-chilling horror movie that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats. Based on the novel by Richard Matheson, the film tells the story of a team of paranormal investigators who are hired to spend a week in the infamous Belasco House, known as Hell House. The haunted mansion becomes their battleground as they encounter terrifying apparitions and supernatural occurrences beyond their wildest imaginations.

The ideas of scientific facts vs. faith, or believers vs. non-believers hadn’t really been explored much in film, and while we as the audience could see what was happening in the film, the actors were so into their roles, that the non-believers were almost convincing. Our commitment to delivering trustworthy and engaging content is at the heart of what we do. Each fact on our site is contributed by real users like you, bringing a wealth of diverse insights and information. These words open up quite possibly one of the most soul-stirring haunted house movies ever made; a PG-rated classic from 1973 that never seems to get its due when discussing horror films in the subgenre, and one that nails the atmospheric requirements flawlessly. It’s been five decades since the release of The Legend of Hell House, and it deserves celebration. Despite mixed reviews upon its release, “The Legend of Hell House” has gained a deserved cult following over the years.

From the eerie setting of abandoned hotels and amusement parks to the terrifying entities lurking within, these films will leave you questioning what lies beyond our reality. The film is presented as a documentary investigating an unexplained accident at an abandoned hotel in the town of Abaddon in Rockland County, New York that was set up as a haunted house. The film is presented in a documentary style, following wealthy entrepreneur Russell Wynn’s endeavor to use the infamous Abaddon Hotel for an immersive theater experience named “Insomnia,” based on the Faust legend. Despite being aware of the location’s dark history and numerous warnings about ongoing supernatural events, Russell remains determined to proceed.

While I’m a huge fan of Matheson’s novel, I had never seen The Legend of Hell House until celebrating its 50th birthday. Now, I’m kicking myself for waiting so long to see such an innovative film and obvious inspiration in the haunted house subgenre. If you haven’t seen it (or you haven’t read the book), I highly suggest you do the same. However, it does draw inspiration from real-life haunted house legends and paranormal experiences. In this article, we will dive deep into the world of The Legend of Hell House and uncover 37 fascinating facts about this iconic movie.

‘The Witcher’ Season 4 Adds Three New Names to Cast

Valentina's writing covers a wide range of topics connected to TV shows, movies, and books, but her expertise truly lies in the realm of high-fantasy, science fiction, and horror. Her diverse interests and love of all things imaginative are reflected in her writing, with favorites like "Lord of the Rings," "Terminator," "House of the Dragon," and "Alien" inspiring her. Valentina's all-time favorite book is the classic "Roadside Picnic," and she holds a special place in her heart for all of H.P. Valentina's goal as a writer is to bring objectivity and insight to the subjects she covers, even when tackling genres that may be outside of her comfort zone. Her unique blend of academic background and creative spirit makes her a standout in the world of media writing and editing. The documentary crew, led by producer Diane Graves, interview people familiar with the case and find rumors of something supernatural behind the tragedy.

The Legend of Hell House was released on DVD by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment on 4 September 2001. Fischer decides to confront the house, and Ann accompanies him despite her misgivings. Deciphering Tanner's dying clue, Fischer deduces that Belasco is the sole entity haunting the house, masquerading as many. He taunts Belasco, declaring him a "son of a whore", and that he was no "roaring giant", but instead more likely a "funny little dried-up bastard" who fooled everyone about his alleged height. Even as objects begin to hurl themselves at Fischer, he continues to defy the entity, and insults Belasco's physical stature. Fischer then concentrates, and a stained-glass partition in the chapel shatters, revealing a hidden door.

The cat moves indoors when Florence is suddenly attacked by the animal one night in her room. It’s never fully explained what the cat is doing in the house or why it is being used as an instrument of violence by the powers within. The cast was a plethora of decently-known character actors that brought their individual styles to the small, intimate group of investigators. Mr. Deutsch's mansion in the opening sequence is Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. With the room now open, Fischer activates Barrett's machine a second time, and he and Ann leave the house, hoping that Barrett and Florence will guide Belasco to the afterlife without fear.

In addition to a number of award-winning shorts, like High Desert Hell and The Gemini Project, the up-and-coming genre filmmaker has previously been tapped to helm multiple music videos for the L.A.-based indie rock band Mt. Joy. It’s likely that the ‘Hell House’ franchise will continue, but this hasn’t been confirmed yet. Director Stephen Cognetti expressed his wishes to expand the universe, get a higher budget, and move on from the found footage genre, and that makes us hopeful for the future. After filming wrapped within Lehighton in May, the production then moved to New York City, where most of the interviews were filmed.

A vivid and powerful opening paragraph to Shirley Jackson’s 1959 updating of the classic ghost story, The Haunting Of Hill House, regarded by many, including Stephen King, as one of the most important horror novels of the Twentieth Century. The novel has been filmed twice, both times under the title The Haunting (1963 and 1999), and was also inspiration for William Castle’s House On Haunted Hill (1959 and 1999). In 1971, prolific horror author and screenwriter Richard Matheson successfully created his own take on Shirley Jackson’s tale, adapted his own novel to the big screen and introduced us to The Legend Of Hell House (1973). Evil Dead is, of course, Raimi’s horror franchise going back to 1981’s same-name film starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, a combatant of various supernatural entities.

The film opens with Wendy Mallet recounting the tragic disappearance of her son, Jackson, who entered the abandoned Abaddon Hotel over a year ago and never returned. A distressing video shows Jackson desperately running through the hotel, experiencing a mental breakdown, and being approached by a cult follower.

From its origins as a novel to its adaptation onto the big screen, this movie has left an indelible mark on the horror genre. So grab some popcorn, turn off the lights, and prepare to be terrified by this haunting tale. In the aftermath of a tragedy at Hell House, where 15 people lost their lives due to an “unknown malfunction,” a documentary crew led by producer Diane Graves investigates the incident. They uncover rumors of supernatural involvement and interview Sara Havel, the lone survivor from the Hell House staff. Sara provides footage documenting the lead-up to the tragedy at the Abaddon Hotel, revealing unexplainable events and hints of a Satanic cult history.

The script, written by Matheson himself, masterfully combines elements of exorcism, possession, and psychic phenomena to create a truly chilling narrative. The production design deserves special mention, as it successfully brings the haunted mansion to life, enveloping the audience in a world of darkness and dread. Only a year ago, scores of spry British tweens and their parents packed into grocery stores, stuffing their arms with bottles of brightly colored Prime. The drink—originally an electrolyte-spiked coconut water that expanded its offerings to caffeine-loaded energy drink cans costing less than $2.50—was put on resale sites for 1,200 British pounds, or almost $1,500. It became so popular that last summer, UK retailers put security stickers on individual bottles of a new strawberry watermelon flavor to deter theft. “My biggest thing is that when you walk into someone’s house,” says Tish, “I want you to know who lives there, what their personality is, what they love, and what they’re like. Much like Miley herself, the home is beautiful and boisterous, all the while steady and disciplined in its exuberance.

Englanoff took control of the property, rebranded it and sold it for $47 million later that year. Last year, he told the Wall Street Journal that there have been multiple times when he was forced to stop construction because of a lack of financing. He also said that he has funded construction with cash from sales of other properties. Niami, known for his brazen personality and wildly ambitious real estate projects, borrowed $82.5 million from Hankey Capital in 2018 to build the extravagant home. Prime’s success is owed in large part to kids obsessed with the brand. Between its social-media stunts and limited drops, Prime was built for the glued-to-their-phone tweens of today. Indeed, shortages of the beverage line in Britain forced smaller retailers to mark up the prices of Prime—and for grocery chain Tesco to implement a limit of three bottles per customer. Recent scrutiny of the brand has not been kind to Prime, but there’s another wildcard variable that could be the nail in the brand’s coffin, experts say.

Elected by their peers, certain representatives hold positions that combine institutional, administrative and partisan roles. Deeply reported insights into legislation, politics and policy from Sacramento, Washington and beyond. The GOP could pick up a sizable number of seats from the outstanding races, too. Together, these should get the GOP over the 218-seat hump, but how far over remains to be seen. As Dec. 13, incumbent Republican Lauren Boebert was declared victorious over Democrat Adam Frisch in Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District, giving Republicans 222 wins in this fall’s election, compare to 213 for Democrats. On Nov. 28 Virginia Rep. Donald McEachin (D) passed away after his recent reelection, leaving the House with one vacant seat and membership in the incoming Democratic caucus at 212.

A key focus of the hearing was how the algorithms developed by these companies are designed to hold our attention, a feature that has been particularly harmful to kids. The redrawing of district lines resulted in the inclusion of a large number of liberal and gay voters in the Palm Springs area. Rollins is gay and regularly campaigns with his husband; Calvert has a history of voting against LGBTQ+ interests and his allies outed a Democratic rival in a 1994 campaign. Calvert, who said his view on gay rights has evolved and he now supports same-sex marriage, beat Rollins by fewer than 5 points last year, a result that may prompt national Democrats to invest in the race. Most are in swaths of California that voted for President Biden yet elected a GOP congressional representative — districts that both parties consider prime battlegrounds in 2024.

Sen. Raphael Warnock’s victory over Republican challenger Herschel Walker in Georgia’s Dec. 6 runoff election solidified Democrat’s continued control of the U.S. Earlier results of this November’s elections flipped control of the incoming membership of the 2023 U.S. Thus, this year’s close election resulted in divided governance between the two bodies of Congress. WASHINGTON – All 435 House seats will be up for grabs in 2024, and both Democrats and Republicans are feeling bullish about their chances to control the lower chamber. The Committee of the Whole House is a committee of the House on which all representatives serve and which meets in the House Chamber for the consideration of measures from the Union calendar.

During these meetings, party members discuss matters of concern. The Constitution vests certain exclusive powers in the House of Representatives, including the right to initiate impeachment proceedings and to originate revenue bills. The organization and character of the House of Representatives have evolved under the influence of political parties, which provide a means of controlling proceedings and mobilizing the necessary majorities. Party leaders, such as the speaker of the House and the majority and minority leaders, play a central role in the operations of the institution.

House leadership includes the speaker, majority and minority leaders, assistant leaders, whips and a party caucus or conference. The speaker acts as leader of the House and combines several institutional and administrative roles. Majority and minority leaders represent their respective parties on the House floor. Whips assist leadership in managing their party's legislative program on the House floor. A party caucus or conference is the name given to a meeting of or organization of all party members in the House.

Information about the source, type, amount, or value of the incomes of representatives, officers, and candidates. The district should be a solid pick-up opportunity for Democrats, but they have failed miserably three elections in a row. The former assemblywoman blasted her party for failing to back her in last year’s election. This election, the Republican is expected to receive stronger financial support and his Democratic rivals lack Porter’s fundraising prowess. The race was further scrambled when the candidate Porter endorsed, state Sen. Dave Min, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in Sacramento.

Biden's focus during the next two years of his presidency will likely be spent defending his signature accomplishments, like a bill lowering prescription drug prices and investing hundreds of billions of dollars to tackle climate change. GOP lawmakers have already said they want to roll back some of Biden's programs, or defund many of them. House were held on November 3, 2020, and coincide with the 2020 presidential election. After more than a week of counting, the Republican Party gained the 218 House seats needed to claim the majority, ushering in an era of divided government. With three Republican absences and one Democratic absence, Republicans can only lose one member of their caucus and still have the votes to pass legislation. The chaplain leads the House in prayer at the opening of the day.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report, which has tracked House and Senate races for decades, rates nine of the state’s 52 congressional districts as competitive, the most of any state in the nation. Each state is guaranteed at least one member of the House of Representatives. The allocation of seats is based on the population within the states, and membership is reapportioned every 10 years, following the decennial census. House members are elected for two-year terms from single-member districts of approximately equal population. The Constitution empowers the House of Representatives to impeach federal officials for "Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors" and empowers the Senate to try such impeachments. The House may approve "articles of impeachment" by a simple majority vote; however, a two-thirds vote is required for conviction in the Senate.

Coming into Election Day, Democrats and Republicans each held 50 seats in the Senate, but Democrats held power via Vice President Kamala Harris’s tie-breaking vote.1 To shift the balance of power, Republicans needed to win one net seat. But as things stand, the Senate will include 48 Democrats, 47 Republicans and the occupants of five as-yet-unprojected seats in Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Nevada and Wisconsin. Prior to the 2022 election, the House was controlled by Democrats, who held an eight-seat margin among the 433 currently filled voting seats (two seats were vacant). All 435 voting seats as well as five of the six non-voting seats were up for election.

Joanna Weiss, an attorney like Porter, is also running for the seat and has the backing of former Rep. Harley Rouda, who planned to run for the seat until he suffered a brain injury. We need to have the candidates who can message, knock on doors and can generate voter enthusiasm and who can deliver these votes,” said Rep. Pete Aguilar (D-Redlands), chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. Of the 435 seats in the House, Democrats need to capture five held by Republicans next year to take back control of Congress.

In 2007, Pelosi became the first woman to be speaker, shattering the so-called marble ceiling in Congress. She took the gavel a second time in 2019, after leading her party back to the majority, but indicated that she would abide by a pledge that helped her secure the votes for speaker to term limit her tenure in leadership. Many newer members have expressed support for paving the way for a new, likely younger Democrat to take the helm of the caucus. The current caucus chair, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., is expected to run for the post as minority leader if Pelosi decides to retire. The Constitution provides that the House may choose its own speaker.[50] Although not explicitly required by the Constitution, every speaker has been a member of the House.

But the bill hasn’t been brought for a standalone floor vote in the GOP-led House amid criticism from some Republicans who say the program subsidizes households that already had internet service. They also pointed to findings from the FCC’s internal watchdog last year that providers failed to comply with the program’s rules and improperly claimed funds. SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — New California congressional maps finalized Monday leave the Los Angeles area with one fewer U.S. House seats and sets up a handful of highly competitive races for next year's midterm elections. Since Republicans only needed to pick up one seat to gain a majority, and since the party in control of the White House typically loses seats in Congress during midterm elections, it was very possible that control of the Senate would change hands.

The House’s standing committees have different legislative jurisdictions. Each considers bills and issues and recommends measures for consideration by the House. Committees also have oversight responsibilities to monitor agencies, programs, and activities within their jurisdictions, and in some cases in areas that cut across committee jurisdictions. McCarthy first ran for speaker in 2015 to succeed Speaker John Boehner, who was retiring.

All southern senators except Andrew Johnson resigned their seats at the beginning of the war, and therefore the Senate did not hold the balance of power between North and South during the war. In the 118th Congress which runs through Jan. 3, 2025, Republicans have majority control of the House of Representatives. Republicans took back the House by a slim majority in the 2022 midterm elections. The last time Republicans had control of the House was in the 115th Congress.

Yet despite those historical headwinds, Democrats did much better than expected in this year's midterms and kept control of the Senate. The committees also play an important role in the control exercised by Congress over governmental agencies. Cabinet officers and other officials are frequently summoned before the committees to explain policy. The Constitution (Article I, section 6) prohibits members of Congress from holding offices in the executive branch of government—a chief distinction between parliamentary and congressional forms of government. Most committee work is performed by twenty standing committees, each of which has jurisdiction over a specific set of issues, such as Agriculture or Foreign Affairs.

The majority party members and the minority party members meet separately to select their leaders. Third parties rarely have had enough members to elect their own leadership, and independents will generally join one of the larger party organizations to receive committee assignments. As Democrats and Republicans fight for control of the House, all eyes have been on the 17 Republicans representing districts President Joe Biden picked up in the 2020 presidential election.

The path to reclaim the House − as Democrats see it − is through those GOP-held seats. To regain control of the House, Democrats needed a pick-up of 15 seats. According to original analysis by Ballotpedia, only 26 congressional districts were predicted to be competitive in 2014.

The speaker, committee chairs, and some other officials are generally from the majority party; they have counterparts (for instance, the "ranking members" of committees) in the minority party. That we don’t have a final projection for the House suggests it was a fairly good night for Democrats. The president’s party usually does poorly in midterm House elections and President Biden has a mediocre approval rating, two factors that historically portend some ugly results.

The new district has a miniscule registration edge for Republicans. Porter is a fundraising powerhouse with more than $14 million in her campaign account. The borders of Fresno area districts represented by Democratic Rep. Jim Costa and Republican Reps. David Valadao and Devin Nunes shifted significantly. Nunes has already announced he won't run for re-election and plans to lead a media organization launched by former President Donald Trump.

Since learning that the program would end, Aleman said she has been applying for jobs to help her husband cover bills. In May, her husband will pay the internet bill, possibly with credit cards. But the service was unreliable — access would frequently drop or freeze up. So Aleman started leaving her daughter Miranda, now 11, with her sister and neighbors who had reliable internet access so that she could attend online classes and do her homework.

Republican Leadership

The rise of the speaker's influence began in the 1890s, during the tenure of Republican Thomas Brackett Reed. While the minority leader was the head of the minority party, the majority leader remained subordinate to the speaker. The speakership reached its zenith during the term of Republican Joseph Gurney Cannon, from 1903 to 1911. The speaker's powers included chairmanship of the influential Rules Committee and the ability to appoint members of other House committees. However, these powers were curtailed in the "Revolution of 1910" because of the efforts of Democrats and dissatisfied Republicans who opposed Cannon's heavy-handed tactics. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., 82, has not announced whether she will run to lead the House Democratic Caucus.

Other floor leaders are chosen by the Democratic Caucus or the Republican Conference, depending on whichever party has more voting members. Historically, many territories have sent non-voting delegates to the House. While their role has fluctuated over the years, today they have many of the same privileges as voting members, have a voice in committees, and can introduce bills on the floor, but cannot vote on the ultimate passage of bills. Presently, the District of Columbia and the five inhabited U.S. territories each elect a delegate. A seventh delegate, representing the Cherokee Nation, has been formally proposed but has not yet been seated.[30] An eighth delegate, representing the Choctaw Nation is guaranteed by treaty but has not yet been proposed. Additionally, some territories may choose to also elect shadow representatives, though these are not official members of the House and are separate individuals from their official delegates.

The House also has the power to formally censure or reprimand its members; censure or reprimand of a member requires only a simple majority, and does not remove that member from office. Former Rep. Kevin McCarthy, R-CA, was the speaker of the House from Jan. 7 to Oct. 3, 2023. It took 15 rounds of voting to elect McCarthy into the position, the first time in more than a century that the process of electing a speaker took more than one ballot. “These seats will help determine who controls the House for the rest of the decade,” Mitchell said. Other potentially competitive seats include those held by Reps. Mike Levin (D-San Juan Capistrano), and John Duarte (R-Modesto), David Valadao (R-Hanford) and Josh Harder (D-Turlock) in the Central Valley. GOP Rep. Michelle Steel, who represents a district that straddles Los Angeles and Orange counties with many Asian American voters, could also face a challenging reelection bid. Garden Grove City Councilwoman Kim Nguyen, a Democrat, announced her candidacy to represent the district that is home to many Vietnamese American voters.

Article 1, Section 2 of the Constitution provides for both the minimum and maximum sizes for the House of Representatives. Currently, there are five delegates representing the District of Columbia, the Virgin Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. The delegates and resident commissioner possess the same powers as other members of the House, except that they may not vote when the House is meeting as the House of Representatives. 29 of those Republican seats were not up for election this year.
